Portland VA Medical Center is also a teaching hospital connected to Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU), giving veterans access to shared research, training, and clinical staff at one of the region's leading academic medical institutions.

VA disability compensation is a tax-free monthly payment for veterans with a service-connected disability. Compensation rates are set by the VA and adjusted annually. Having a disability rating also opens up additional benefits at both the federal and Oregon state level.
A service-connected disability rating of 40% or more qualifies you for Oregon's property tax exemption. A rating at any level waives the VA home loan funding fee, which can save thousands at closing. A 100% P&T (permanent and total) rating opens additional state and federal programs.
Veterans can apply for disability compensation, check claim status, and request decision reviews entirely online through VA.gov. County Veterans Service Officers (VSOs) in Multnomah, Washington, Clackamas, and Clark counties can help at no cost.
File a claim at VA.govOregon offers a set of state-specific programs that stack on top of federal VA benefits. Many veterans qualify for these programs but never apply because they assume the federal VA handles everything. Each Oregon program requires a separate application.
Disabled veterans with a 40% or higher rating can reduce the assessed value of their primary residence, lowering their annual property tax bill. The exemption is not automatic and must be filed with your county assessor by April 1.
See full details belowOregon offers free or reduced-fee hunting and fishing licenses for service-connected disabled veterans. Eligibility thresholds vary by program and disability rating, with some programs starting at 50% and others at 100%.

Oregon reduces property taxes for qualifying disabled veterans by lowering the assessed value of their primary residence. The exemption is not automatic and must be filed separately from any federal VA benefit.
For the 2026-2027 tax year, Oregon exempts up to $32,512 of your home's assessed value if your disability is service-connected. The exemption amount increases by 3% annually.
If your disability rating of 40% or more is not service-connected, Oregon exempts up to $27,092 of your home's assessed value for 2026-2027, subject to income requirements.
For Portland metro veteran buyers: Filing this exemption takes roughly 15 minutes and saves hundreds of dollars per year on your property tax bill. If you are buying a home with a disability rating of 40% or more, your county assessor's office is the place to start. Contact information for Multnomah, Washington, and Clackamas counties is available through the Oregon Department of Revenue.
Exemption amounts are verified against 2026-2027 Oregon DOR publications. Confirm current figures with your county assessor before filing, as amounts increase by 3% annually and may have been updated since this page was last reviewed.
